to catch the "D" tram. The tram travelled into the city, around the Ring Road, up to the north-west of the city. This area is called the Vienna Woods. The tram stopped at NussDorf and after a bit of reconnaissance, we discovered we could walk to the village of Grinzing (more about Grinzing later).
The almost 2 kilometre walk went uphill through an expensive area, where the rich moved after Emperor Franz Josef I ordered the demolition of the Vienna Ring Wall.
We enjoyed the walk so much.
Grinzing
Was a mediaeval village, populated mainly by winemakers and workers. The history is fascinating and connected to the church monastery. You might remember the story in an earlier blog, of the monks giving the people wine to drink so they would defend the village. This church had a date of 1726 on it.
And then there was lunch. How lucky we were to have a great healthy lunch here.

Time to walk the 2 kilometres back to the tram. This time we noticed Beethoven Haus.
Apparently Beethoven spent summer here in 1817.
