Walk in Wales Day 3 - Resting in Corwen

After a hearty English breakfast, we walked into the village, taking note of the many historic buildings, including the "Corwen Manor" which was built as a workhouse in 1837 (see above), and "Tramps' Rest" where for a day's work in the quarry, a tramp could sleep, leaning on a rope! The whole main street has historic buildings. Then we visited The Church of Saints Mael and Sulien, surrounded by very old graves. The epitaph of Owen Owen the train driver read:

The oldest grave I could find was this one from 1694.

We went back to Caffi Treferwyn for the second time. This is known as the "Welsh" cafe as it is where the Welsh speaking people hang out. The owner was extremely friendly and the drinks amazingly cheap. The owner said that the women come in the afternoon and the men in the morning! They go in every day for a cup of tea.

There is quite a gulf between the Welsh speaking and the English speaking Welsh, we are told. Also, the English who live here look down on the Welsh and no doubt the Welsh resent the uppity English. Luckily we Aussies don't belong to any group so  they are all nice to us. Another thing is that in Llangollen  I twice had my ears filled (by the galley man on the narrow boat and a man on a bus) with a mouthful of Welsh hatred of immigrants - no different to some stuff I have heard in Australia although I thought the comment "they all ought to be euthanised" was a bit off.  Tonight we will eat at the local Indian restaurant - I am glad they didn't euthanise the owners.

Apart from these two bigots, we have found the rural Welsh to be delightfully friendly. Along the track yesterday, we had quite a chat with a dear old white haired and white bearded farmer. His two boarder collies were almost human as they tried to get our attention. I wish I had taken this darling man's photo. He told us that he had never been away on a holiday - " ... why would I? It is so beautiful here - what else could I want?"
Our other activity today was to go to the Rhug Estate organic farm and restaurant for lunch. Our host drove us there but we walked the 1.8 miles back.

Goodness, it is almost sherry o'clock and we will go downstairs to the drawing room for that!
