This afternoon we went down a gold mine which began when they first found gold in 1894. It was developed until it had 17 levels, and went down 510 metres and was at its best by 1933. In 1933, the village had grown to have quite a few schools, a hospital and many dwellings. An Englishman called Hunter owned it and developed the machinery at one stage. The mine was closed during the war and reopened in 1947.It closed for good in 1972.
Recently, a great deal of work has been done in order to make the tunnels safe and informative for visitors. It certainly was impressive as we wound our way down the tunnels and looked at historic information, mechanical models and beautiful caves.
I think the pictures speak for themselves.
