Bendigo

We have just had a holiday down south. Our first stop was Bendigo. We stayed in a bush cabin just out of town. For my international friends, Bendigo is a historic gold mining city.
There is an obvious pride of this place. Keith is standing in front of a memorial to miners and then in staircase of the lovely Shamrock Hotel (1897) where we had lunch but could not afford to stay (Dame Nellie Melba stayed here!).

Bendigo has many houses like this. We were told the name of the architect but I can't remember. They all have the front veranda with 4 posts and a variety of fancy iron work.

The next 2 photos are of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, which Keith thought was every bit as good as some of the famous European ones.

We went on the Bendigo Talking Tram which is all that is left of the original tramways, but I think it is wonderful that they have preserved the tram lines for visitors to have a guided tour of the city.

This is just a snapshot of this lovely city but somebody else did a much better blog on Bendigo so if your interested try it.

From Bendigo we collected cousin Noellene at Trentham East and travelled to Lorne.
